John Birks Gillespie, nicknamed Dizzy, was born in 1917 in South Carolina, USA. He had a long and illustrious career as a trumpeter, band leader, singer and composer. With Thelonius Monk, Charlie Parker and Kenny Clarke he pioneered bebop. He was also responsible for integrating Latin rhythms into bebop, leading to salsa. Throughout his life he did much to popularise jazz around the world with successful tours around Europe and the Middle East. He died in 1993.

Based on the Oris Junior of 1970, and with a plaid patterned dial and ‘improvised’ numerals, the Dizzy Gillespie watch is limited, according to his year of birth, to 1917 watches, all individually numbered.
