Born in 1899 in Washington, DC, USA, the great jazz composer, pianist, and band leader Duke Ellington had piano lessons at an early age but didn’t develop a passion for music until his late teens. Even so, he made great progress, starting his professional career three months shy of graduation. Popular from the 1920s to his death in 1974, he promoted African-American music, put his own interpretation on rag time and swing, and developed the jungle style. The Duke played throughout the world and was awarded the Legion of Honour by the French government and the Presidential Medal of Freedom by the US government.

In 2002 Oris launched the Duke Ellington Limited Edition, a tonneau watch limited to 999 pieces.
